작년 말 Saturn에서 Wilhelm Kempff의 Schubert 피아노 곡집을 구입했다.
Kempff는 Richter와 함께 제가 가장 좋아하는 피아니스트다. 그의 주옥같은 연주가 CD 2장에 빽빽하게 들어있다. (1960년대 후반 녹음. 수록곡은 여기를 참조)

수록된 ‘악흥의 순간’, ‘즉흥곡 op90 & 140′ 등의 유명한 곡들 중 가장 좋아하는 것은 첫 곡인 ‘Sonata B flat major, D960′. 1악장이 이상할 정도로 긴 곡이지만 슈베르트 다움이 뚜렷한 그의 최고 걸작이라 생각한다.
Kempff의 이 67년도 연주는 희미한 색조를 띤 깊은 울림을 들려주는, 추종을 불허하는 명연주다. 지난 겨울, 유난히 손이 많이 갔더랬다.

가장 즐겨듣는 Bach의 곡 중 하나.
Glenn Gould 의 1982년 녹음을 듣고 처음 좋아하기 시작했으며, 현재는 Wilhelm Kempff 의 1970년 녹음반을 가장 즐겨 듣습니다.

Wilhelm Kempff 의 녹음에 대한 어느 청취자의 말을 옮기면,

The tempo is perfect. The flow is smooth and natural. Kempff distils the essence of the Aria and all 30 variations without adding any “flowery” ornamentation. There is no repetition, and the resulting simplicity and smoothness is just perfect to ears of the ultimate Goldberg fanatic. This recording is a real masterpiece.
